Lake Natron and Lake Magadi Safari

LAKE NATRON AND LAKE MAGADI SAFARI

Trip duration

5 days/ 4 nights

The Lake Natron and Lake Magadi Safari can be combined with our Masai Mara Widllife Safari.

DAY 1: OLORGESAILIE MUSEUM TO LAKE MAGADI

Our Lake Natron and Lake Magadi Safari will kick off at the amazing and historical Ngong Hills view point. The Ngong Hills have been made famous by the book and film Out of Africa, which features the story of Karen Blixen. Our guide will share the story of the Ngong Hills and then you proceed down the escarpment into the Great Rift Valley.

We shall continue our Lake Natron and Lake Magadi Safari to the famous Olorgesailie pre-historic site and museum. This is often referred as the “factory of stone tools”; and indeed it has many of these. Scientific evidence has shown that this place used to host a lake basin that acted as the lifeline of human species about 100,000 to 200,000 years ago. Here you will enjoy learning about the findings of the peoples of the Acheuleus or “Hand axe” culture.

In the afternoon, we shall proceed to the beautiful Lake Magadi area, one of the Great Rift Valley Lakes. We shall enjoy a relaxed afternoon in camp as we enjoy some great sun bathing.

Night in Magadi.

DAY 2: LAKE MAGADI

On our second day of the Lake Natron and Lake Magadi Safari, we shall enjoy exploring the vast and beautiful Lake Magadi area.

This is a soda lake that hosts a local soda ash mining factory. The lake has a huge array of birds, and we often find a great number of Lesser Flamingos and Greater Flamingos; among other waterbirds. We shall enjoy a morning birding and photography session around the lake.

The lake has multiple hot springs that can be explored on foot, allowing you to try out their therapeutic properties on your skin. We shall visit these springs in the afternoon. Some dry country mammals may be encountered too, such as the Gerenuk antelope, Common Zebra, White-bearded Wildebeest and the tiny Kirk’s Dik-dik.

Night at Magadi.

DAY 3: OL KIRIMATIAN CONSERVANCY AND SHOMPOLE CONSERVANCY

We shall then proceed to the Ol Kirimatian Conservancy where our Lake Natron and Lake Magadi Safari will continue to the second leg. We shall enjoy a game drive around the conservancy and the neighbouring Shompole Conservancy, as we scan for local mammals.

Mammals expected here include African Golden Wolf, African Lion, Savannah Elephant, Common Zebra, Unstriped Ground Squirrel, Olive Baboon, Common Impala, White-bearded Wildebeest, Grant’s Gazelle, Spotted Hyena, Leopard and White-tailed Mongoose.

In the afternoon, we shall take another game drive, and then enjoy some sundowner drinks at a suitable location. We shall also get to enjoy nocturnal mammals both on a game drive and also at the lodge photography hide. This is often a highlight on all our Lake Natron and Lake Magadi Safaris.

Night at Ol Kirimatian or Shompole.

DAY 4: LAKE NATRON – AND MORE OF OL KIRIMATIAN CONSERVANCY AND SHOMPOLE CONSERVANCY

We shall spend the morning exploring the beautiful Lake Natron – a key site for our Lake Natron and Lake Magadi Safaris. This is a famous soda lake at the Kenya-Tanzania border, which serves as the largest breeding site for Lesser Flamingos in East Africa.

Here we shall enjoy driving and walking around the lake shores as we view animals and birds. Mammals here include African Golden Wolf, Common Zebra, White-bearded Wildebeest and Grant’s Gazelle. Highlight birds include Lesser Flamingo, Great White Pelican, Lanner Falcon and Kori Bustard.

From the lake shores, you will have great views of the majestic mountains that occur between the Kenya-Tanzania border. Key mountains here include Mount Ol Doinyo Lengai (a recently active Volcano), Mount Ol Doinyo Gelai and Mount Shompole.

This afternoon, we shall enjoy another game drive and sundowner experience in Ol Kirimatian Conservancy or Shompole Conservancy. Depending on our success the previous evening, we have the opportunity for another night game drive and photography hide experience.

On this day, there is an opportunity for an optional Maasai Village Visit. This is one of Africa’s best-preserved cultures and you will get to learn about their way of life while visiting a local homestead. There is also an optional Helicopter Ride over Lake Magadi or Lake Natron, where you view the landscapes and wildlife from the air. Kindly alert our safari team in advance if you would like to book these extra activities.

Night at Ol Kirimatian or Shompole.

DAY 5: OL KIRIMATIAN CONSERVANCY AND SHOMPOLE CONSERVANCY – TO NAIROBI

We shall have a relaxed morning at the lodge as we enjoy some swimming, bird walks or nature walks. We shall also take time to enjoy the sights and sounds of the area.

After a nice lunch served at our lodge, we shall pack up ready for our journey back to Nairobi. We shall then drive back to Nairobi – marking the end to our lovely Lake Natron and Lake Magadi Safari.
