Laikipia is a special place in Africa and indeed a wildlife haven; which makes all our Laikipia Safaris such a great adventure. Laikipia is known to host the highest density of wildlife in Kenya- maybe even more than anywhere else in East Africa. We shall be hoping to connect with these beautiful animals during our Laikipia Safaris.

Laikipia elephants are very abundant and the region hosts the second largest population of elephants in Kenya. Other special animals here include the globally threatened Grevy’s Zebra- the World’s most beautiful zebra species; the Gerenuk or “Giraffe Antelope”; Beisa Oryx; and the charismatic Reticulated Giraffe. Laikipia is also a very special place for rhinos; hosting all types of East Africa’s rhinos- Black Rhino, Southern White Rhino and the rarest rhino species – Northern White Rhino.

DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN KENYA – NAIROBI, THE AFRICAN SAFARI CAPITAL

Our Laikipia Safari will start in Kenya’s tourism capital, Nairobi. We shall arrive via the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, where our Tour Leader will be ready to receive us and kick start our journey. We shall then head to our hotel in Nairobi, where we shall check in.

On this day, if we have an early arrival, we may explore local attractions around Nairobi. The city has a national park at its edge, making it one of the most special conservation cities globally. Otherwise, we can relax and enjoy the nice Nairobi weather from our hotel; as we prepare for the Laikipia Safari.

DAY 2: INTO LAIKIPIA – MT. KENYA WILDLIFE CONSERVANCY AND MOUNTAIN BONGO SANCTUARY

We shall then head North, crossing the Equator to Mt. Kenya Wildlife Conservancy, at the foothills of Africa’s second-highest mountain. The key highlight of our Laikipia Safari here is the Critically Endangered Mountain/ Eastern Bongo- the largest forest antelope in Africa.

The other key animals we enjoy are the rare White Zebras (formerly wild in the Samburu area of Northern Kenya; the President of Kenya requested the ranch to host the remaining population and save it from poaching in the 1970s) and Pygmy Hippos. Some unique mammals here are cross-breeds; including Horse-zebras (horses with stripes) and Mangaboon (cross between baboon and the mangabey monkey).

We shall also visit the local animal orphanage and learn about the work being done here to rescue threatened animals.

DAY 3: MT. KENYA NATIONAL PARK – DAY HIKING TRIP

On this day we shall enjoy a leisurely hike up the mountain as we enjoy the various habitat types that inhabit Mt. Kenya. This hike is a popular activity on our Laikipia Safaris. We shall have our vehicle nearby throughout the day and we shall be able to access it whenever we feel tired. We shall drive to a starting point, some way up the mountain.

From there we shall hike into the upper strata of the mountain crossing various habitats:- tropical rainforest, bamboo zone, hagenia forest, heather forest and moorland vegetation. We shall enjoy splendid landscape views as we move up the mountain; and will also enjoy the local Giant Lobelia flowers. Our safari guide will help you learn about the local birds and mammals; as you hike.

DAY 4 AND 5: OL DOINYO LEMBORO RANCH

Our Laikipia Safari will then continue deeper into Laikipia County. Our next days will be spent exploring the beautiful Ol Doinyo Lemboro Ranch; bordering the Ewaso Narok River.

We shall be keeping an eye for mammals such as Zorilla, Aardvark, Grevy’s Zebra, Nile Hippo, Cape Buffalo, Savannah Elephant, Striped Hyena, Beisa Oryx, African Wild Dog, Aardwolf, African Lion, Leopard and Cheetah.

DAY 6, 7 AND 8: SUYIAN RANCH

From here, our Laikipia Safari continues through the dry Northern Kenya; which is one of the best safari destinations in Africa. The wildlife here is special as do the pristine landscapes. We shall enjoy this area with the beautiful Suyian Ranch as our base. Suyian Ranch covers a land area of 43,495 acres; teaming with beautiful animals.

Suyian Ranch also hosts camels; and camel milk is a common delicacy here. The Suyian honey production yields two tonnes of purely organic honey annually. The local cultural connection is amazing in this area, hosted by the Samburu people of Northern Kenya. For those who love Yoga, Suyian is a Yoga-paradise; and many events are often hosted here due to the calm and serene environment.

The mighty Ewaso Narok River transects this vast land and supports life for thousands of people and wildlife. Along this beautiful river, schools of Nile Hippos take rest inside the water to cool off during the day.

We shall enjoy game drives and nature walks here looking for Savannah Elephant, Gunther’s Dikdik, Leopard, Cheetah, Jackson’s Hartebeest, Cape Buffalo, African Lion, African Wild Dog, Striped Hyena, Reticulated Giraffe, Beisa Oryx, Gerenuk and Grevy’s Zebra. Birds here include the Secretarybird and Vulturine Guineafowl.

DAY 9 AND 10: OL PEJETA CONSERVANCY AND SWEETWATERS CHIMPANZEE SANCTUARY

Our Laikipia Safari will proceed to East Africa’s largest Black Rhino sanctuary, Ol Pejeta Conservancy. We shall be keeping an eye for mammals such as Cape Buffalo, Grevy’s Zebra, Savannah Elephant, Spotted Hyena, Beisa Oryx, African Wild Dog, Jackson’s Hartebeest, Black Rhino, White Rhino, African Lion, Leopard and Cheetah. Birds here include the Grey Crowned Crane and White-bellied Bustard.

We shall also enjoy time at the Chimpanzees Sanctuary, which is the only place to see these Great Apes in Kenya- a key highlight on our Laikipia Safaris. Another top highlight of Ol Pejeta Conservancy is the Northern White Rhinos Sanctuary- there are only two individuals left on Earth; and both are hosted at Ol Pejeta.
