2 nights Mt. Kenya Hike and Ol Pejeta Conservancy Safari

2 NIGHTS MT. KENYA HIKE AND OL PEJETA CONSERVANCY SAFARI

2 Nights Mt. Kenya Hike And Ol Pejeta Conservancy Safari

DAY 1: MT. KENYA NATIONAL PARK – HIKING ON THE EQUATOR

On this day we shall enjoy a leisurely hike up the mountain as we enjoy the various habitat types that inhabit Mt. Kenya. This hike is often a highlight of our 2 nights Mt. Kenya Hike and Ol Pejeta Conservancy Safari. Mt. Kenya is Africa’s second-highest mountain and has a wide base accessible from different hiking routes.

We shall choose a route that best fits the current weather at the time of the safari and also consider your hiking experience. Some routes require more skilled hikers but most routes are easy and can be done comfortably without prior experience. We shall have our vehicle nearby throughout the day and we shall be able to access it whenever we feel tired. We shall drive to a starting point, some way up Mt. Kenya.

Mt. Kenya rises to a peak of 5,199 metres above sea level. The mountain is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Mt. Kenya is an extinct volcano (3.1-2.6 million years ago). It is thought that when it rose to full height, before eruption, Mt. Kenya was around 6,500 metres above sea level. Mt. Kenya has about 20 glacial tarns (small montane lakes) of varying sizes; but the glaciers on the mountain are receding gradually. The top peaks of Mt. Kenya include Batian (5,199 metres above sea level), Nelion (5,188 metres above sea level) and Lenana (4,985 metres above sea level).

From where we alight the vehicle, we shall hike into the upper strata of Mt. Kenya crossing various habitats:- tropical rainforest, bamboo zone, hagenia forest, heather forest and moorland vegetation. We shall enjoy splendid landscape views as we move up the mountain; and will also enjoy the local Giant Lobelia flowers. Our safari guide will help you learn about the local birds and mammals; as you hike.

Night at Mt. Kenya.

DAY 2: OL PEJETA CONSERVANCY AND SWEETWATERS CHIMPANZEE SANCTUARY

We shall enjoy beautiful game drives at East Africa’s largest Black Rhino sanctuary – a key site for our 2 nights Mt. Kenya Hike and Ol Pejeta Conservancy Safari. We shall be keeping an eye for mammals such as Cape Buffalo, Grevy’s Zebra, Savannah Elephant, Spotted Hyena, Beisa Oryx, African Wild Dog, Jackson’s Hartebeest, Black Rhino, White Rhino, African Lion, Leopard and Cheetah. Birds here include the Grey Crowned Crane and White-bellied Bustard.

We shall also enjoy time at the Chimpanzees Sanctuary, which is the only place to see these Great Apes in Kenya- a key highlight on our safari. At Ol Pejeta, you will have a chance to alight on foot and take a selfie with the famous Equator line sign; and sometimes on clear days Mt. Kenya is visible behind you. Another top highlight of Ol Pejeta Conservancy is the Northern White Rhinos Sanctuary- there are only two individuals left on Earth; and both are hosted at Ol Pejeta.
